We deserve to die!
Hmmm, I was in the shower the other day, thinking of how humans treat the planet earth. Melting ice, deadly poison gas in air and the cities. Horrible. I can not believe we still use cars which are not run by electricity yet! We put all this money and effort to research and discover things about our past, about our ancestors, how they survived and how they died out. We put lots of money and time into future as well. But in the middle of all these "rush" I think we have forgotten the present time, we have forgotten ourselves. For what I can see, we will too die out like old civilizations. However, the old civilizations was at least able to leave something behind, huge pyramids for example. All we have now is small silicon chips! We have almost no big and huge things which can last several thousands of years like the things left by our ancestors.

It scares me.

I was talking to some friends, about this idea I have. I told them I dream of making a pyramid, bigger than the biggest pyramid in Egypt. I would like to put as many memories and information about our civilization in it, for the future generations. I want them to learn from our mistakes, when we die out they might do the same mistake as we do. Slowly destroying ourselves and the planet. Their reaction to my idea was to laugh at me. They told me I am going crazy. I find this sad. I am almost certain 95% of other people would have almost the same reaction to this. It's sad. No one cares.

If one day we die out, well actually WHEN we die out and vanish from the planet earth (by "we" I mean our civilization the way it is) we have only ourselves to blame. Judging the way we behave toward our mother earth, the only place we are able to survive for now, the only thing comes up into my mind is this : We deserve to die.

Dreams and the Future!
Most of the general population has no say in the disbursement of the funds necessary to our survival on this planet. We have been conditioned to believe `consumerism` is who we are. It seems A small faction of humans control the resources, idea`s, religion and spiritual consciousness of the entire population for their own specific purposes. Any invention, idea, or good will that would benefit us all is suppressed....if it cannot be metered for profit, then it`s useless. If we cannot consume it for gold then it`s worthless.

We haven`t necessarily forgotten ourselves; it seems we have all been conditioned to believe in certain realities designed to keep us in the dark or at least occupied and entertained. It is not our fault! Instinctively, I think we all know this...Why else would some of us be here on sites such as this and others like it to voice these thoughts? So, with all that in mind, I say we don`t all deserve to die...more and more humans are beginning to understand all of this and break through our current mélange to try and reach a new way to appreciate life.

Your idea of building a massive pyramid for storage of our collective knowledge resonates quite clearly with me. Let others laugh at this idea. I think it`s great. It fact, I would like to expand upon it: Design it not only physically but also with a spirit and a purpose. Turn it into a city of learning and ease of access to facilitate human expansion into our solar system. A place where knowledge is not suppressed and idea`s are made real. Instill the human spirit of pride in knowing that there is an infinite something out there beyond our ken to understand. What is wrong with trying to know God? It only means we`ll all be trying to know Him for...well...infinity!

I suppose a pyramid and city complex of this sort could be done with profit in mind. (Think of the square footage if such a place were built. Especially the underground structures...a public underground city...vertical as well as horizontal...I say this for the greedy among us...lol)

By the way, this is a great thread. Too bad it took 10 years for anyone to start responding to it. I wonder why.....

I agree
I agree and understand 100%, its like the worlds doesnt think beyond what they evolve into and what they see, I hate to say but if change doesnt come our next generation will be worse.

I understand what your saying.

The Mayans, the Atlantians and so forth all left a thumb print and clues behind for us of much more knowledge and advancement than we have yet get even close to, little own understanding it. Many don`t even believe what they have left behind, and using simple minds shrug it off, or call it myth.

Scientists have `proven` evidence that the world has been destroyed and needed to be re-built 6 times since the earth began... all within the same proximity of the next `re-birth` of the earth. What do we have to show for it as a civilization should this occur again? We haven`t come all that far in knowledge nor technology nor have we tried to better ourselves. It`s become a me, myself and I society.

So in that sense, you are correct. We have nothing to show for who we are, and what we know. Sad really.

i`m with you.
the more i follow world events, mostly the more i see how people react to world events with such hatred and such ignorance.., hypocrites all of us. we`re a pretty pathetic species, and i really don`t think we`ll ever really "get it", despite the few who seem to have a semblance of the right idea. even they (i) fall short at some point. really makes it hard to appreciate or enjoy anything else. it seems life`s design is to suffer. i`ll be glad when i`m gone.

Must we?
Why must we it is only our nature. We take but don`t give back.It is the will to survive.if you had the power would you truly destroy the human civilation for another species?Everything has a negative effect on this planet.would you give up your life for a dog to survive?

it is enevitable all creatures shall come to an end. With death comes life.It is the human nature to be greedy.Yet thta is where the will to survive is.

I believe
I had the same thought you had and came to a similar idea and conlussion. We do indeed deserve to die. Thinking of it I realized that we are one of the worst plagues in the earth if we are not "THE" worst plague. We reproduce and eat out our homes, we are like piranahs and the wolrd is a juicy body full of succulent meat. We eat it blindly enjoying ourselves until we realize that we ran out of it and there is only the bones left. None the less we are a smart species. We might have the power to change the shape of the earth and some of its components, but we are not smart enough to put a stop to our greed. We still have a lot to learn about the planet and about ourselves. Just like some people think that Earth is not the only planet capable of suport life its just logical to think that in our planet we wont be the first and the last to become a rational, thinking species. Only time will tell. Hopefuly we wont screw up the planet so much that when new thinking species come up they can still develope and that when/if they do we wont be stupid enought to do the same thing that happened when black people came to USA, or like in WWII, when hitler tried to kill every jew, hippi, etc.

The book Ishamel is very good in explaining how we think of ourselves and how we can change our way of view for the better, ther is also My Ishmael which is the second book. We don`t need to dsiapear, ok some do, but we can change ourselves or evolve in our way of thinking. I agree with Scree.

A point though, when refering to a civilization you must clear out if you mean the entire human race, since as we know there many, from the Mayans, Romans, Incas, etc. When refering to a monument or architectural symbol for the civilization of the human race we will leave as a legacy chunks of rusted metal, since all of our buildings has metal in them as a base. But if we take each continent as a civilization then each continents has its own symbolic architecutre. If we see at the entire human race culture then surely as a legacy (talking about all the years the human race has existed) we can take as an example the Great Wall in China, or the ruins in Machupichu, The Pyramids in Giza, Chichenitza in Mèxico, etc, etc. Humans will surely leave a legacy, but perhaps not in the same way we intend to. We still have plenty of years, lets see if we can be smart enought to stop ourselves. There is a book in which Our "civilization" was wiped out, because someone released a virus, designed to transform the petroleoum to be reactive in contact with air, wich made it volatile. When the petroleum was burned out the vacteria dispersed into the air reaching airlpains and anything that had petroleum. In the end there were massive explotions and cars, airplains, helicopters, petroleum plants all went in flames. We of course had a major lose in numbers, sufering a regression in technology. IF anyone is interested is a young-adult nobel, its a trilogy and the first book is called uglies. The first book gives a good idea of what happened after that, a good plan indeed, but anyway, is a novel of an IF.

Yes, but...
One issue though, I think none of the things you mentioned beside the voyager are explicity built for future generations. I doubt any of them could survive a large scale change of the climate. But pyramids could and have. Also, voyager is out in space and not on Earth.

Another thing is that pyramids contain a lot of information of the past for the future and even the way they are built point to certain math formulas or stars, etc.

Monuments and Legacy
This post is just and argument aganst our civilization not creating large or lasting monuments.

One thing to mention first off is that there is only one surviving wonder of the ancient world and that is the pyramids. There are only two really large pyramids in egypt. Here is how the largest one stacks up aganst one of our modern marvels:

Hoover Dam-
Height - 726.4.feet
Length at Crest - 1,244 feet
Width at Top - 45 feet
Width at Base - 660 feet

Great Pyrimid of Khufu (origional)
Width at Base - 754 feet
height - 481 feet

The hoover dam isn`t even the largest. The statue of liberty is larger than the Colossus of Rhodes. The temple of Artemis was the most beautiful (greek) structure in the world however, dare to compare that with the Chicago Museuem of Sience and industry which was built for the 1893 worlds fair built in the same style. http://chicagouncommon.com/photography/gallery/874 or the field museuem (make sure you check out the other pics here!) http://www.photovault.com/Link/Cities/Lake/Chicago/Places/FieldMuseumNaturalHistory.html

The pyrimid complex in Giza also has the Sphynx however Mount Rushmore is twice as big and is a beautiful work of art carved out of granite which will last many times longer than the limestone of the Sphynx. This is not to mention the carving of Crazy Horse (also granite) which when finished will be 563 feet high and 641 feet long dwarfs the Sphynx at 60 ft high and 240 ft long.

The Light House of Alexandria was 384 ft tall the tallest non pyramid of the ancient world but, I will compare it to the Empire State Building at 1,250 ft. It is not the tallest building any more but it ceartanly is durable. In 1945 it sustained a head on collision from a B25 bomber and is no worse for the wear! some other great tall monuments (I`m not counting the Eiffel Tower because it will rust if not taken care of) are the Washington monument a 555 ft Egyptian obelisk finished in 1885 and the San Jacinto Monument in Texas is 570 ft high with a 220 tonne star on top much heavier than the largest 70 tonne blocks of the great pyrimid on the bottom. The St. Louis arch is 630 ft tall, made out of stainless steel and is shaped so hurricane force winds will slip right by it. It should stand for thousands of years.

The hanging gardens of Babylon (which may never have existed) hummmm... while keeping a large garden in the desert is one thing, the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory boasts tropical forests from five contenents, a desert oasis, and floral show displays all of wich can be visited in the dead of a Wisconsin winter under 3 behive shaped domes each 15,000 square feet. Actualy, most of mid americas botanical gardens far excede what any ancient garden could produce including the chicago botanic garden which is 385 acres (1.5 square kilometers) and is 26 gardens in one.

Everything I mentioned is open to the public and not just the kings and queens as in ancient times.
However, if you want the ultimate testament to our legacy, the voyager 1 & 2 spacecraft cary a golden record with sounds and greetings of earth, printed messages, pictures, and information on our chemical makeup and location in the universe. Since there is no erosion in space, these will last millions or billions of years until some other race comes across it. http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/goldenrec.html We also have orbiting time capsules. In fact there were over 10,000 time capsules buried in the 20th century including one on top of the John Hancock building, see this cool site on time capsules http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/goldenrec.html.

So, all in all, I think we are Adequately represented.
Best regards fellow humans. And, good luck.

Virus
I think comparing us to virus isnt really offbase, we feed we destroy and we multiply as much as possible without thinking of leaving something behind... but as i said before we are a resiliant species, cockroachs got nothing on us! I can compare this with bacteria and endospores.. some bacteria have the ability to develop bacterial spores ( endospores ) when things get hard, like when food runs low a few bacteria in the colony become endospores they can then survive in this form for millions of years! yes millions and they are basically unkillble and when food and conditions become favorble again they revert back to their bacterial form... this could be the scenario some of us faces in a 100 years or so.. if we do destroy most of the planet there will most likely be a million or two of us who manage to survive somewhere down below...

reminds me of that old game fallout!

Re: Scree|Sim: Or...
Yes, human kind might not die out. But humans in the current way and our civilization in its current status will most probably die. One example, Our cities are so badly built that too much reain destroy them!

Or...

I just got this idéa from "SIM"s post... indeed a few thousand of mankind being on Earth is just a fraction of time from the evolutionary point of view... so we might as well be like those deadly viruses. They kill the host so rapidly that they don`t survive much longer either. We might kill the host "Earth" so rapidly that we will not be able to survive. Maybe if we are lucky, we are able to find another host ("planet") to infect before Earth is dead.

I feel in an odd way when I compare us to viruses. *lol*

Re: Scree
Well i suppose if you look at it in terms of the amount of suffering our current civilization inflicts upon itself and the planet we dont really deserve much! but one could also look at this in a different perspective... modern man has only existed a few thousand years, that is nothing from the evolutionary point of view.. perhaps we as a race and civilization that i believe does evolve along side us simply needs more time and at this point of our evolution we are simply not capable of doing any better as a species... We are evolving, and even though we still keep repeating the mistakes of history even though we still keep slaughtering ourself, many things have changed for the better with the introduction of sciense we are able to understand ourself our planet and the universe in a whole new light. We now have the means to break free from the bonds of religion and look for the truth, the answers that will save us...

what i mean is, there is reason to think that we will make it in the end even if it means a lot of pain and suffering for us and our planet along the way.

Re: Sim
My good fellow, when you say our race is not going to die out, I think I must agree with you. Unfortunately, save the Earth actually breaking up under our feet, or the atmosphere buggering off, we are a fairly resilient race, and will probably survive most things. However, I stand by ``-_-´´ and my initial argument, that we Deserve to die out.

I suppose throughout history there have been many `civilizations`, such as the `Ancient Greeks` and the Romans. And these Were civilizations, not just Empires. I think they were organised as a way of life, rather like our current, material-oriented way of life, as opposed to a governing system (Although clearly their governing bodies were also organised differently to ours). So perhaps what I mean when I say "We deserve to die" is more specifically "Our civilization deserves to die", i.e. it`s time for some kind of massive change.

Forgive me if I am not making sense, in fact, I am well aware that many of the previous `civilizations` were as bad, if not worse, than ours. But I think, even if ``-_-´´ is not in agreement with me on this, that this is what I meant when I said "We deserve to die".

/Scree  (2004-08-30 01:07) (direct link)

P.S
The pyramid Idea is great. But it will never happen like many other great ideas, people very seldom do things just because its right.
/Beethoven, SIM  (2004-08-27 03:44) (direct link)

we will not die out
No the human race is not doomed as such. our enviroment certainly does not have much chance. Our civilizations will for sure die out eventually if you look at history... but i dont believe we will die out as a race i think we are much more resiliant than even the toughest vermin! even if it means trying to make a living after a nuclear holocaust we will do it.. the problem is it would certainly be tragic if it comes to that.

But i do put faith in sciense even dispite all the politics and money grubbing that is the core of all our problems.. there is a good chance that before we destroy everything sciense will become so advanced and things will be so easy that there wont be any need to destroy the planet as we are now.. there wont be any money in it!

/Beethoven, SIM  (2004-08-27 03:43) (direct link)

Doomed!
Yes, indeed sometimes I feel that we are doomed. As you said, huge dust storm of idiot people can`t be stopped. Until they all die. Yes indeed we are doomed. Yes indeed we will be wiped out. I hope when the human race ends its journey... some other and smarted race replace it... which is capable of keeping his home safe and clean. And who cares for our planet Earth.

Initially remarking on ``-_-´´ and humans
Sir, I cannot agree with you more. Except on your mention of cars run on electricity, as I am to understand that electricity must be produced in some way, and even wind farms are not a good solution, as they take energy out of the air and will eventually A L T E R the climate that way.

The trouble is, there is no real solution, even if you find all those 5% of people who are, for want of a better word, ashamed of how humans behave, they will almost certainly not change the way They behave, and even if they do, what good is it going to do against the swirling dust storm of people who just don`t care enough? I think John Wyndham had the best idea in his book The Day Of The Triffids. I recommend it. Not only does it have very real parallels with our current life (it was written mid last century), but it is terrifyingly prophetic. If we don`t destroy the world which feeds, waters and shelters us, we will probably destroy ourselves anyway (as a race), and the worst thing is, it`ll probably be an accident! But even if we don`t, we deserve to die. We kill each other. It`s all you see on the news.

They`re mostly bloody holy wars too. Some bastard at the head of some country decides the other bastard at the head of another country has different beliefs to him, and therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the bloody company of heaven, decides to rain fire and reduce the whole bleeding blasted ******** world to ***** (I`m trying, I`m really trying to make this a PG).

We deserve to die.
